In 2014, the dominant Bitcoin marketplace, Mt. Gox, fell victim to a race
condition

. Attackers found a vulnerability whereby they could force
the Bitcoin marketplace to accept an altered transaction and block a
legitimate transaction. The net result was that Mt. Gox was drained of
